A rescue incident involving a large animal can be a complicated and high-profile event for first responders. A presentation on equine and large animal rescue, featuring Dr. Peter Conserva of the Connecticut State Animal Rescue Team (SART), was held at Pomfret Community School in late March.

Organized by Derek May, assistant chief of the Pomfret Volunteer Fire Department and emergency preparedness coordinator for the Northeast District Department of Health, the program was attended by local fire, EMS, emergency management and response teams, as well as horse owners and veterinarians. A main focus of the presentation was to increase first responders’ safety at an emergency scene involving large animals.

When Pomfret Horse & Trail Association learned that many fire departments do not have the proper equipment to perform a large animal rescue, the group decided to purchase a 4” x 30’ nylon sling and two 1” shackles and donate them to the Pomfret Fire Department. This equipment will be on the rescue truck and available in the event of a large animal rescue. Equestrians in Pomfret can rest assured that emergency personnel will have the proper equipment and training if such a situation occurs, increasing the chances of a favorable outcome.

Within the next few months a hands-on outdoor presentation which will involve working with the Connecticut SART trailer and life-size equine mannequin will be held as a follow-up to the March seminar. For more information contact Derek May at dmay@nddh.org
